Sunday brunch – Unheard of!

So brunch must be moved to Sunday this week because… well, because we have lives. None of us will be around this Saturday, so we hope you can join us on Sunday at The V-Spot in Park Slope.

This week you’re all invited to a taste of my world, as The V-Spot is a completely vegan restaurant. Don’t let that scare you away, the food is delicious and the staff is sweet. Also, the billboard outside has been advertising a free pancake with the purchase of a mimosa. Whether this will still apply this week, we can only hope.

Sunday Oct. 26th
The V-Spot
156 5th ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 622-2275

Come around noonish :-)

Also, please RSVP in the comments so we know how many people to expect – thanks!

review of Alchemy

so we missed you all at brunch— quick review of the place: the egg white omlete and french fries were good– i have to agree with micaela– the drinks were wayyy over priced so i had to opt for tea– all in all good place– nice servers (one moved a very heavy umbrella to shield us irish kids from the sun)

hope to see you next week for more fun adventures in brunching and of course the celebration of one of our founding member’s  birthday!!

Alchemy

Our brunch club was sadly missing some members yesterday, though we did see the return of Kate. Kate and I went to her choice for brunch, Alchemy. We had a delightful meal sans mimosas (as they were $8 each!) Note to Alchemy, when your drinks cost as much as your meal, it’s time to reprice. Next time we go, we’ll make our own mimosas at home first.

I had my first tofu scramble with mushrooms, spinach, and onions. It was a bit soggy, but hey, maybe that’s how a tofu scramble goes. I did get a refill on my coffee, which was a nice first for Brooklyn, and our waiter was very sweet.

We again forgot to take pictures of our meals, but I promise we’ll try next week.

Invitation to brunch :)

You are invited to yet another fun filled Saturday brunch on October 11th.  So the important info:

When: October 11th

Where: Alchemy Restaurant and Tavern

56 5th Avenue

Brooklyn, New York 11217

718.636.4385

Home

Why this location as opposed to all the other lovely places to chat over coffee and greasy breakfast goodies????: While there were many great competitors this week, Alchemy stood out for its vegan friendly attitude, its proximity to where we live, and its intriguing looking dishes (Sweet Guinness Pancakes).

Beast is the best!

I’ll take the hint, Kyle. Here’s the “vegan perspective”:

Beast was by far my favorite brunch so far. It started off well when we ordered coffee and the waitress was happy to get me soy milk. No more black coffee! Then I looked at the menu and there were plenty of vegetarian options, including Kyle’s polenta and David’s granola. I found a veggie wrap at the bottom of the menu and asked if it had dairy. The waitress assured me it didn’t. Before the meal came, she made a point to stop by and warn me that the chipotle sauce had egg in it and she had told them to just not put it on the wrap. It was so sweet of her, I hadn’t even asked about egg or said I was vegan. Yay, Beast, well done :-)

The veggie wrap itself came with sides of fresh salad and roasted potatoes, which made it feel more like brunch than lunch, and my only complaint was that I wanted more potatoes (they were so good!). The wrap was delicious – juicy and fresh-tasting. It was full of zucchini, portabello mushrooms, onions, and many other delicious vegetables. The lack of chipotle didn’t really affect the taste of the wrap, and aside from being a little dribbly (I squirted portabello juice on Kyle and had to use my tide pen) it was perfect and satisfying.

Beast’s atmosphere is great, the food is delicious, and – though a little slow on coffee refills (what’s up with that, Brooklyn?) –  the waitstaff went above and beyond. That’s all from the vegan perspective… back to you, omnivores… or was it omelette whores?

Best part is, this wasn't posed...

Brunch Club IV – Welcome new brunchers!

Brunch Club IV was a hit at Beast, which was suggested by founding member David.  I’d like to offer a big welcome to new brunchers Katy and Rafi!  Rafi found us via my Twitter account.  Thanks for coming out, y’all!

Micaela and Kyle gettin' down with the strong coffee at Beast

Micaela and Kyle gettin' down with the strong coffee at Beast

I had the Sauteed Polenta (mixed with goat cheese, arugula and sun-dried tomatoes, topped with a tomato sauce, served with baby green salad). It was really delicious, but I felt like the tomatoes overwhelmed the texture of the polenta a bit. If you love sun-dried tomatoes you’d love this dish! Brunch is fairly priced at 13.95 for a meal including coffee or tea and a mimosa or bloody mary. For a lush atmosphere, great service and a menu of quality and diversity I thought it was a steal!

Keep an eye out for the vegan perspective from Micaela (hint hint)!

Enjoy the coffee shot; we sure did! More photos available on my Flickr.

Saturday, Sept. 20 – Cheryl’s Global Soul

Today the Brunch Club visited Cheryl’s Global Soul (website available at http://cherylsglobalsoul.com).

The garden looked really pretty, although seating there was tight and we would have had to wait a while.  The interior was pleasant though, made cozy by panels of 2×4’s along one side wall and part of the ceiling. The art on the wall was an interesting choice, given that it depicted images of children with warheads that seemed to clash with the rest of the relaxing and quiet interior.  The “pre fix” (note to menu author, a prefix is a grammatical term.  The words you’re looking for are “prix fixe”) menu was a pleasant combination of tried and true standards complimented by presentation that, although minimalistic, did not sacrifice form for function.

The prix fixe also included coffee and choice of mimosa (a little weak, but still refreshing) or a bloody mary (which was strong, and seemed to be homemade rather than derived from a mix). The coffee was brewed strong, just the way I like it, although we were never offered a refill. We were pleased to see apple cider on the menu as well. It was very thick and fresh. For cold cider, it could have been diluted a bit, but served hot it would have been perfect.

Micaela, the vegan of the group, was nonplussed to find there were no vegan options on the brunch menu, but easily modified one of the sandwiches by asking for no cheese. The sandwich itself was comprised of grilled onions, portobellos, tomatoes, eggplant and zucchini with a small side of greens and vinaigrette. The bread was some sort of delicious multigrain-rye-thing, the same that was served toasted with breakfast. Micaela reports that, with the exception of slightly overcooked eggplant, the huge sandwich was delicious. It was so big that she used her fork to eat it, but seemed very happy to do so!

Kate, the vegetarian, was able to get her protein with a three-egg breakfast but passed on the options of bacon, pork sausage, or chicken sausage (nice for non-pork eaters). I, the picky picky omnivore (omelette whore) also ordered the three-egg breakfast, although in retrospect would like to have tried the poached eggs with smoked trout hash. The eggs were served with well-seasoned sauteed red potatoes, that yummy multigrain ryeish type toast, and the meat option. The portion sizes were actually pretty good; I couldn’t finish everything, but if I’d been hungrier I might have.

Overall we liked Cheryl’s, but as a sucker for diner kitsch and classic breakfasts I’m not sure it would be my first choice for brunch with friends. It would, however, be an excellent choice for a brunch date. The atmosphere is definitely romantic but not overtly so: a gorgeous, sun-dappled garden in the warm months and the cozy cabin feel of the interior for the cool months. The menu is comfortable but elegant and the price, averaging $13 for each of us, is more than reasonable for the ambiance.
